"Stride for Stride"

Art and stories celebrating the quiet heroes of the Boston Marathon since this year is the 100th time the marathon has started in Hopkinton.

March 26 - April 18, 2024

We are excited to announce a special call for art. Do you have an inspiring story about the Boston Marathon? Have you captured it in a photograph, painting, poem, or sculpture?

We’ve seen the stories. The beloved dog, Spencer, sat on the sidelines year after year, greeting the runners with a flag in his mouth. The man who ran the course backward to raise awareness for Epilepsy in honor of his son. The Hoyts showed the fierce love and bond between a father and son. And they go on and on and on. We’ve seen the best of the human spirit and watched them all over the years, the heroes among us.

Memories of Heartbreak Hill
“I grew up a few houses away from Commonwealth Ave at the start of Heartbreak Hill. The Boston Marathon was a part of my childhood. All the neighborhood kids and I used to hand out water and orange slices to the runners and cheer them on to keep going. As a young child, I was intrigued by those who would trickle by, hobbling along as it started to get dark long after most of the pack had crossed the finish line. I wanted to know more about why they were pushing themselves so hard.
It has evolved over the last 50 years since I sat on the grassy medium of Commonwealth Avenue with my friends, and now I find myself working in the
community that hosts the start of this infamous course. But the kid in me still wants to know the stories. We’ve celebrated the history of the Boston Globe’s coverage. We’ve celebrated the first woman (Bobbi Gibb) to run the marathon, and now it's time to tell all the other stories from the everyday runners who all have a story to tell. We are listening.”
Sarah Alexander, Gallery Director and Curator.
